In 1492, when Colombus landed in the Caribbean, he believed he had reached the East Indies, thus calling the inhabitants Indians. In 1735, the Swedish Linnaeus gave formal recognition to the original inhabitants of the New World by labeling them the 'American' or 'red' race. Two thousand or more different cultures came to be lumped together. They were not easily classifiable under a single cultural heading because of their great variety.
